Word Work: Our class will be learning about the r-controlled syllable pattern this week. Words that follow this pattern include artist, teacher, direct, actor, and curly. A poem will be sent home on Thursday for your child to read with you as part of their nightly reading.

Laps for Lincoln:  Our Laps for Lincoln fundraiser is off to a great start.  Thank you so much for all of your support through a wonderful week. Our walk will take place this Friday at Lincoln School from 5-7. It is such a fun evening! Sadly, I will only be attendance for the first half hour. I have been very involved with Lory's Place since it started over 20 years ago and this Friday is their Reflections Dinner.

Math:  Our second graders are making great progress in our first unit.  From some of the papers coming home, you can see we have focused on proving how to solve addition and subtraction problems within 50.   Students use the strategy of making a ten to solve larger problems.  For example when adding 8+7, students break apart the 7 into 2+5 and make  a ten by adding 8+2 and then add 5. So 8+2+5=15.  Students will use this strategy to add and subtract within 100.
