Weekly Update
October 19, 2026
Student Included Conferences: Thank you to those who have attended conferences. I am looking forward to seeing the rest of our families this coming week.
Word Work: This week our class will be learning about adding -ed and -ing endings to words. Students should read their word lists, discuss the meaning of the words, and practice spelling words with similar syllable patterns.
Halloween Party: Thank you to all who have volunteered to help and/or send in supplies for our party. Our second grade party will be from 10:25-11:25 a.m. The students are looking forward to this celebration. Students may wear their costumes all day, and we will have an all school costume parade outside on the blacktop at 3:15. If it is raining, the outside parade will be canceled.
Math Unit 2: This past week, we began unit 2 in math. In this unit, students will add and subtract within 100 using strategies such as base 10 blocks and breaking apart numbers. Students will also be using these strategies to solve story problems. It is during this unit that parents often wonder about the use of the traditional method of stacking the numbers and borrowing/carrying. We save this strategy until later in the year. During these early units, students need to strengthen their understanding of place value, the breaking apart of numbers, and the relationship between addition and subtraction. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Math Night: For a 2nd year, math night for SJ 2nd graders is returning to the high
school. See the attached flyer for details and use this link to sign up.
